HENRY VERNON HERNDON

Henry Herndon, age 85, of Cedar Springs, GA passed away Wed., Nov. 2, 2022. Mr. Herndon had been living in Rome, GA with his daughter and family since Hurricane Michael. Memorial services for Mr. Herndon will be held on Saturday, Nov. 12, 2022, at 2:00 PM at the Chapel of Evans-Skipper Funeral Home in Donalsonville, GA with Scott Preston presiding. Mr. Herndon was born Nov. 16, 1935, to Wesley and Inez Tharpe Herndon. He was a member of Carr Advent Church in Clarkesville, FL. He was married to the love of his life, Joan Richards Herndon on Aug. 15, 1958. Mr. Herndon served his country in the Army until 1965. The couple moved to Cedar Springs, GA to work at the "new" paper mill where he retired from GP after 32 years. He was maintenance foreman. Mr. Herndon continues to have many friends at GP, as well as his son, Jeff. Mr. Herndon loved to farm and harvest vegetables, fruits and especially sugar cane. He and his family would make cane syrup to share with neighbors and family. Both Mr. and Mrs. Herndon loved sharing all harvests with their community. Mr. Herndon enjoyed building, woodworking, and anything outdoors with his children and grandchildren. He loved the Lord and read his Bible every day, but he especially knew the value in living for Christ in his later years. Mr. Herndon leaves to cherish his memory one sister, Doris Mayo, as well as his children, Jeff Herndon and Jennifer Preston and husband Scott. Four grandchildren also survive, Elizabeth Herndon who attends the University of Alabama, Sarah Herndon who is a student at Dothan High School, Emily Preston who is a UGA graduate and 6th grade teacher, and Jackson Preston who is a 9th grader at Unity Christian School in Rome, GA. Pop also had many nieces and nephews that he loved very much. He was preceded in death by his parents, Wesley and Inez Tharpe Herndon; his wife, Joan Richards Herndon; his sisters, Jewel Herndon Smith, Inez Herndon Spikes, Laryce Herndon Koenig, Opal Herndon O'Neal, and Violet Herndon Jones; as well as his brothers, Earl Herndon and Boyd Herndon.
