Garland Ashley Register, Sr., 80, died Monday, May 14, 2018, at Magnolia Place, Cairo, Georgia, following a short illness. Ashley had been a resident at Magnolia Place for a brief two months after having resided in Donalsonville, Georgia for 52 years. The son of the late Guilford Troy and Vera Clyde Stallings Register, Ashley was born June 28, 1937, in Valdosta, Lowndes County, Georgia. In addition to his parents, Ashley was preceded in death by his brothers Prescott , Troy, Jr., and Ray, and sisters, Aristene R. Kelly, Narene R. Sikes and Rena R. Myddleton. Ashley graduated from Valdosta High School in 1955. After serving four years in the U. S. Navy, he received his B. A. in History and English from Valdosta State College in 1963. After receiving his J. D. from Woodrow Wilson Law School in Atlanta, GA in 1966, he moved his family to Donalsonville as a Cotton States Insurance Company Staff Investigator. His various enterprises through his 52 years in Seminole County included farming, real estate, stock brokerage and insurance. Ashley served as the Seminole County Administrator of Estates for several years until his retirement in 2014. Ashley was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church of Donalsonville, GA for over 50 years serving on committees, the diaconate, as a choir member, and as a Sunday School teacher and superintendent. Through the years he served his community as a member of the Seminole County Board of Commissioners, Tri-State Soil and Water Conservation Board, Lions Club and Donalsonville Country Club. His hobbies included reading, fishing, playing golf, visiting with friends at the coffee shop and feeding friends and family at the Dawg House. Surviving are his wife of almost 58 years Martha Harrell Register, three sons and spouses, G. Ashley Register, Jr. (Laura) of Cairo, GA, Mark Register (Andrea) of Helena, AL and Brinson Register (Libby) of Donalsonville, GA, and eight grandchildren: Ellen Register, Anna Register Gardner (Greg), Prescott Register, Seth Register, Elena Register, Charles Register, Andrew Register and Annie Register. Additionally, he is survived by sisters-in-law Brenda Rackley Register, Dorothy Harrell Nickoley and Rachel Harmon Harrell and many nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held at the Evans/Skipper Funeral Home Thursday, May 17 from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. The funeral service will be at the First Presbyterian Church, Donalsonville, GA Friday, May 18 at 2:00 p.m. with the Reverends Dr. Raymond Guterman and Dr. Tom Sikes officiating. Interment will be at Friendship Cemetery, Donalsonville, GA. Serving as casketbearers will be Prescott Register, Charles Register, Seth Register, Andrew Register, Greg Gardner, Bob Sikes, Troy Register and Fred Kelly.
