CHARLES WILMER "BUTCH" GODBY, JR

IRON CITY

Charles Wilmer “Butch” Godby, Jr, age 81, of Iron City, GA, passed away Sunday evening, Nov. 10, 2024, at his residence.

 Funeral services for Mr. Godby will be held on Thursday, Nov. 14, 2024, at 2:00 PM at First Baptist Church of Donalsonville, with Rev. Tim Bell, Rev. David Grubbs, and Capt. Craig Singletary officiating. Interment will follow in Brinson City Cemetery with Georgia State Patrol Honor Guard serving as active pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be active and retired Georgia State Patrol, as well as active and retired members of area law enforcement organizations. Visitation will be held on Wednesday evening, November 13, 2024, from 5:00-7:00 PM at the Chapel of Evans-Skipper Funeral Home. The family will be receiving friends at the home of Marc Godby.

 Mr. Godby was born in Donalsonville, GA on March 22, 1943, to Charles Wilmer Godby, Sr. and Nell Jeffcoat Godby. He graduated from Bainbridge High School in 1961 and became a Trooper with the Georgia State Patrol, working to protect our state for 30 years before his retirement. Mr. Godby enjoyed jet skiing on the creek and playing with his grandchildren on the sandbar. Driving fast, racing cars for which he won numerous trophies, as well as hunting and fishing were among some of his most favorite pastimes. He also enjoyed helping out and eating ice cream at The Peach Depot with family members, and to quite a few he will affectionately be remembered as “Big Hat”.

 He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife, Joyce Godby of Iron City, GA; his children, Jo Ann Godby Lane and husband Doug of Donalsonville, GA and Marc Godby and Sherry Dixon of Brinson, GA; and his sister, Glenna Godby Thornton of Camilla, GA. Also surviving are his grandchildren, Meed Kelley and wife Beth of Brinson, GA, Kati Godby Hunter and husband Vic of Iron City, GA, and Taylor Godby and fiancé Kamrin Camp of Clayton, GA, as well as his great grandchildren, Ryleigh Kelley, Conner Kelley, Ella Hunter, Eden Hunter, and Charles Luke Hunter. Numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins also survive.

 Mr. Godby was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Wilmer Godby, Sr. and Nell Jeffcoat Godby.
