Berta Louise Holley Retherford, age 97, of Jakin, GA, passed away Friday, December 13, 2024, at Southeast Health in Dothan, AL.

Mrs. Retherford was born on June 19, 1927, in Cottondale, FL, to Wiley James Holley and Luella Sullivan Holley. After graduation from Cottondale High School, she attended cosmetology school in Dothan and was a hairdresser for several years. In 1951, she married James Retherford. An artist, she had a God-given talent and through the years had won many first place and other ribbons for her paintings. One of her originals, a beautiful church, hangs in the fellowship hall of Jakin Baptist Church. She and her husband operated Retherford’s Sporting Goods in Donalsonville for many years. Berta lived in an apartment attached to the home of her children. A faithful member of Jakin Baptist Church, she would often help with crafts and food during Vacation Bible School and she led the adult ladies Sunday School class for a number of years.
She leaves to cherish her memory, her daughter-in-law, Jean Retherford of Jakin, GA and her granddaughter, Holly Widner and husband Chris of Donalsonville, GA; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Retherford was preceded in death by her parents, Wiley James Holley and Luella Sullivan Holley; her husband, James Retherford; and her son, James “Jim” Retherford.
