We regret to announce the passing of Mrs. Beryl Spooner Broome, age 86, who passed away at her residence in Donalsonville, GA on Saturday, June 17, 2006. She was the widow of Hugh D. Broome, Sr. Graveside funeral services for Mrs. Broome will be held on Tuesday, June 20, 2006 at 10:00 AM at Friendship Cemetery in Donalsonville, GA with Dr. Ron McCaskill officiating. Visitation will be held on Monday evening, June 19, 2006 from 7:00-9:00 PM at the Chapel of Evans-Skipper Funeral Home. Mrs. Broome was born to Dr. John I. and Annette Folmer Spooner on November 17, 1919 in Seminole County. She attended Agnes Scott and received her biology degree from Shorter College. She was a passionate gardener, always propagating and crossing various species. She developed and maintained beautiful gardens at her home and her desire to beautify through plants led to projects throughout the community. In 1994, Mrs. Broome was awarded an 'Appreciation for Community Contributions over a Lifetime' by the Donalsonville Chamber of Commerce. Mrs. Broome was a founding member of the Seminole County PTA and was instrumental in starting the school lunch program. Mrs Broome recognized a need for organized activity for girls in Donalsonville, so she helped bring the Camp Fire Girls to the area then remained a group leader for years. She was active in the Boy Scout program, serving as a den mother for many years. Mrs. Broome's desire to teach children led to her significant involvement in developing the curriculum for the Children's Manor Kindergarten. Mrs. Broome's generosity and love for her town was shown by her donations of property for the Seminole County Senior Center and the Olive Theatre building to the Seminole County Arts Council. Mrs. Broome was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Donalsonville Womans Club and the Donalsonville Garden Club. Mrs. Broome is survived by her loving children, Hugh D. Broome, Jr. and his wife Brenda of Donalsonville, GA, Anne Broome Trawick and her husband Chason of Columbus, GA, Karen Broome Sheffield and her husband Tom, and Brantley Folmer Broome and his wife Jackie, both of Donalsonville, GA; as well as 13 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a son, John Spooner Broome, and a brother, John Ira Spooner, Jr. Active pallbearers will be grandsons, John Brantley Trawick, Dylan Broome, Hugh D. Broome, III, Eric Edmunds, Justin Edmunds, and Richard Broome.
