Helen Fuqua Thomas, former resident of Donalsonville, GA died Friday, December 6, 2013 at her home in Dothan, AL. She was 87. Funeral services will be held Monday, December 9, 2013 at 2:00 PM (CST) 3:00 (EST) in the chapel of Evans-Skipper Funeral Home, Donalsonville, GA with the Rev. Michael Wingertsahn officiating. Burial will follow in the Friendship Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service at 1:00 PM (CST) 2:00 (EST). Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society. Mrs. Thomas was born May 30, 1926 in Clopton, AL to the late James T. Fuqua and Hassie Mae Fuqua. After receiving her degree from Troy, she taught school in Blountstown, FL. Upon marrying in 1947, she moved to Donalsonville, GA and continued to teach there and Jakin, GA. Mrs. Thomas was very active in First Baptist Church, American Cancer Society, Cub Scouts, and numerous civic organizations. She enjoyed many years of boating and water skiing with her family. She also enjoyed playing golf and bridge with friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Taylor Thomas, Sr.; her brothers, Roy Lee Fuqua, J.T. Fuqua, and Bob Fuqua; and her sisters, Dot Fuqua Edwards and Nell Fuqua Clements. Survivors include three sons, John Thomas and wife Suzanne of Albany, GA; Jim Thomas and wife Pam of Dothan, AL; Joe Thomas of Tuscaloosa, AL. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Merridith Thomas Synder and husband Matt of Atlanta, GA; Melanie Thomas Geiszler and husband, Scott of Boston, MA; Lauren Thomas, Maribeth Thomas, Cade Thomas, and Taylor Thomas, all of Auburn, AL; and Tyler Thomas of Tuscaloosa, AL. Casketbearers will be Cade Thomas, Taylor Thomas, Tyler Thomas, Roy Fuqua, Dale Barnes, and Phil Moshell. The family would like to express their love and appreciation to special friends, Drina Deese, Brenda Jackson, Cindy Gunter, Kaye Frith, and Maggie Brackin.
