MARTHA F. COFIELD

March 6, 1910 — April 17, 2012

We regret to announce the passing of Mrs. Martha Ferrell Cofield, age 102, of Donalsonville, GA who passed away Tuesday, April 17, 2012 at Great Gran’s Personal Care Home in Donalsonville, GA. Funeral services will be held on Friday, April 20, 2012 at 2:00 PM at the First Presbyterian Church of Donalsonville, GA with Rev. Dan Jessup and Rev. Wade Spooner officiating. Burial will follow in Friendship Cemetery in Donalsonville, GA. Visitation will be held Friday, April 20, 2012 from 1:00-1:50PM at the First Presbyterian Church of Donalsonville. Mrs. Cofield was born on March 6, 1910 in Rock Mills, AL. She was the second child of a family of eight. There were five girls and three boys. Her parents were John Tom Hudson and Lilla Kate Holladay Hudson. She began elementary school in Hickory Flat, AL and went to high school in Five Points, AL where she graduated in 1927. She attended Jacksonville State Teachers College, LaGrange College and Auburn University. She taught school for a few years in Alabama until she married William Mark Cofield in 1939 and moved to Abbottsford Community outside of LaGrange. She then taught in the Troup County School System until her daughter was born in 1943. She stayed home for a few years, returning to teaching in 1948. She remained in elementary education until she retired in 1972. In 1985 she and her husband moved to Donalsonville to be near their daughter and grandchildren. William Cofield passed away in 1987. Although Mrs. Cofield was a Baptist for many years, she joined the First Presbyterian Church November 7, 1993 and was a member of the Hattie Brunson Circle. She is survived by her daughter, Joan Cobb and her husband Lamar of Donalsonville, GA; three grandchildren, Dr’s Jimmy and Shari Cobb of Athens, GA, Kelly and Mark Earnest of Clayton, GA and Bryon Cobb of Athens, GA; four great grandchildren, Luke Cobb and his wife Laura of Durham, NC, Melissa and Anna Cobb of Athens, GA and Emily Earnest of Clayton, GA. She is also survived by her brothers, Handley Hudson and Waymon Hudson. She was preceded in death by her parents, John Tom Hudson and Lilla Kate Holladay Hudson; her husband, William Mark Cofield, sisters, Mae Lee, Bernice Shephard, Terrell Pound, and Myrtice Bartlett, and her brother, John Hudson. Active casketbearers will be Jimmy Cobb, Byron Cobb, Neal Hudson, Mark Earnest, Ashley Register, Jr., Ben Spooner, and Espy Gray.. Evans-Skipper Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
